Pressure control and irrigation
In irrigation, pressure is everything. Too much pressure and your pipes, fittings, and especially drip lines start failing. Too little pressure and the water never reaches the far end of the farm. Pressure Regulating Valves (PRVs) also called Pressure Reducing Valves , are the small heroes that keep everything in balance.
At GoldenStar Farming, we always emphasize PRVs(irrigation valves) because they protect your system, your investment and your crop performance.
What is a PRV?
A Pressure Regulating Valve is a device installed in an irrigation line to control and stabilize outlet pressure, regardless of fluctuating incoming pressure.
Where Can We Use PRVs?
PRVs are useful anywhere water is supplied under pressure, especially:
– Drip irrigation systems (operating at 0.8–1.5 bar)
– Sprinkler systems
– Gravity + pump hybrid setups
– Large commercial farms
– Any farm using pressurized water supply
Importance of PRVs
– Prevents pipe and drip damage
– Ensures uniform irrigation
– Protects pump and system
– Saves water and energy
Do PRVs Come With a Pressure Gauge?
Most PRVs do not come with a gauge. However, they include a port where a gauge can be installed. It’s recommended to install gauges before and after the PRV.
How PRVs Work
Inside the PRV is a spring-loaded diaphragm that adjusts based on incoming pressure, ensuring the outlet pressure remains constant.
Effective Use of PRVs
– Install close to irrigation zones
– Match PRV setting with emitter requirements
– Choose the correct PRV size
– Include pressure gauges
– Flush system regularly
Installation Guide
– Follow flow direction arrow
– Install upright
– Avoid placing too close to pump outlet
– Use thread tape or unions
– Test outlet pressure after installation
Relationship With Pipe Pressure Ratings (PN)
Pipe selection should match or exceed pump pressure. PRVs balance high pressure in the mainline with low pressure required by driplines and other irrigation equipments.
Common pipe ratings:
PN6 – Max 6 bar
PN10 – 10 bar maximum
PN12.5 – 12.5 bar maximum
PN16 – 16 bar maximum
When a PRV Is a Must
– Pump output above 1.5–2 bars
– Municipal water supply
– Multi-zone systems
– Long mainlines
– Varying elevation areas
Conclusion
A PRV is a small but crucial component in any irrigation system. It protects pipes, ensures uniform irrigation and safeguards irrigation pipes from pressure damage. At GoldenStar Farming, we recommend every farmer—small or large-scale—to install a PRV for reliable irrigation performance.
